Many of us standing together are more powerful than any of us standing alone.

The American Federation of Musicians of the US and Canada represents musicians from all fields and genres, including freelancers or “gigging musicians,” touring, recording, freelance, composers/arrangers — from the nightclub, in theater pits, to the symphony hall — and everything in between.

Many AFM members are freelancers—they are not regularly employed by a symphony, a theater production, or in media production. Musicians have been part of the gig economy since before it even had a name. From young bands just starting out to seasoned performers working regularly—all musicians deserve good wages, decent working conditions, healthcare, and a secure retirement.

Like the industry, the AFM is also changing and evolving, and its policies and programs will move in new directions dictated by its members. As a member, you will determine these directions through your interest and involvement. Your membership will be your key to participation in governing your union, keeping it responsive to your needs, and enabling it to serve musicians better.
