Music Modernization Act is Now Law

Thanks to musicians and their allies joining together, the Music Modernization Act (MMA) is now law. The MMA is a sweeping music reform package that makes it easier for creators to be paid for their work.

Highlights of the MMA include:

  • Establishing copyright protection for those who recorded music before February 15, 1972. Now pre-1972 musicians and other artists will receive royalties when their works are played on digital and satellite radio.
  • Streamlining the music-licensing process to make it easier for rights holders to get paid when their music is streamed online.
  • Ensuring producers and engineers, who play an indispensable role in the creation of sound recordings, receive compensation for their work.
