Solidarity and Justice: Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Today, we honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, a visionary who always reminded us that racial justice and labor rights are inseparable. As musicians, we know that our strength lies in our harmony and our collective voice. Dr. King famously warned that “right to work” laws were a scam designed to destroy the freedom of collective bargaining. His words remain a vital reminder that our union protections are the cornerstone of our humanity and our livelihoods.
We observe this day at a time when far too many people in our communities still feel unsafe in their workplaces. To truly honor Dr. King, we must carry forward the message he delivered to the AFL-CIO in 1961. Let us unite in the fight for a country that upholds the dignity of every person and recognizes the worth of every worker.
Dr. King’s message is more urgent than ever. He taught us that when we stand together against those who seek to diminish our value, a better, more equitable world is not just a dream but a possibility we can build together.
As we move forward, let us recommit to the solidarity that defines the AFM. Let us honor Dr. King’s memory by continuing to fight for fair wages, secure benefits, and dignity for all people. By standing united, we ensure that the music—and the movement for justice—never stops.
In Solidarity,
