New Use

It's not unusual for musicians to find themselves listening to one of their tunes at the movies or at home while watching a favorite TV show. It prompts the question, "Am I due any money for my song being used in that show?"

WHAT IS A NEW-USE?

When a Sound Recording included in an Artist's album is used in a medium that is not an Album or CD, a New-Use of that Tune is created.

The Sound Recording to Motion Picture/Television Film New-Use Department's (SRMP/TV) objective is to collect for the new-use of Sound Recordings that are used in films. In order to meet the large volume of new-uses in today's entertainment industry, the department must continually adjust and find new ways to locate, create and process new-use billings.

SPOTTING A NEW-USE

The SRMP/TV department's daily process includes the nightly videotaping of new TV shows and Films. Hours of taping are viewed daily to scan meticulously for Sound Recordings that can be billed.

LOCATING A B-4 FORM

Once a Tune's use has been spotted, identified and verified, the department's Research Team is notified and the hunt for a copy of the original B-4 Session Report begins.

• Do you have a Database or any computerized archive of your B-4 Forms? If YES, please let me know .

GENERATING A B-7 FORM

After the Research Team has compiled the required B-4 Forms, show information and billing contact information, this data is handed over to our B-7 Contracts Generation Team. This team is in charge of creating a B-7 Form that contains the current information for the musicians who participated in the original recording session, as well as the Wages and Pension amounts that are now due.

In order for a musician to receive his/her payments without delay, the musician must maintain his/her current information up to date. This will ensure that our B-7 contracts generation team, will have the best information at their fingertips.
