AFM Diversity Awards

The AFM Diversity Awards were created in 2005 to recognize outstanding examples of diversity within the AFM. Since 2005, every AFM Convention has set aside time for reflection and the presentation of Diversity Awards. These awards recognize the work that AFM musicians and locals have done to promote diversity throughout their communities.

Locals may self-nominate or submit nominations on behalf of members or committees. All nominations must be submitted through AFM Locals by February 27, 2026, to the AFM President’s Office.

  • Presidents’ Local Award: Awarded to the local that demonstrates diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) via a diverse executive board, articles in the local’s newsletter, a local diversity committee, or events sponsored by the local, which demonstrate diversity in various genres of music. (Locals that have previously won the Presidents’ Local Award are not eligible.) Entry Form Here
  • Charles Walton Diversity Advocate Award: Presented to a member who has shown dedication to both union and community issues throughout their lifetime.  Entry Form Here
  • Charles McDaniel Youth Award: Given to a musician between 16 and 35 years old who has shown their accomplishments as a young, upcoming musician in their local and throughout their community.  Entry Form Here

Each recipient will be honored at the 103rd AFM Convention in June, receiving a commemorative trophy, an all-expenses-paid trip to the Convention, and recognition in AFM publications and media.

The AFM Diversity Committee encourages all locals to participate so we can recognize and celebrate those who are building a more inclusive future for all musicians.
