Musicians To Picket Iron Man 3 Shoot Today

INTERVIEW OPPORTUNITY

MUSICIANS TO PICKET IRON MAN 3 SHOOT TODAY

PROTEST POKES MARVEL’S FOREIGN SCORING ON US TAX $$

UNION HEAD SAYS MARVEL’S OUTSOURCING IS UN-AMERICAN

WHO:         Members of the American Federation of Musicians, the world’s largest labor union of professional musicians. The AFM represents 90,000 musicians throughout the US and Canada and negotiates agreements in the entertainment media sector, including television, film, and sound recordings.

WHAT:      The musicians will form picket lines and distribute leaflets to employees and passers-by at the entrance of a Disney-Marvel location shoot of Iron Man 3.

WHEN:      3pm, Friday, August 10, 2012.

WHERE:    Intersection of Sunnyvale Drive and Knight Road, Wilmington, NC.

WHY:         Members of the American Federation of Musicians are upset because Marvel Entertainment (owned by the Disney Co.) takes millions of taxpayer film production incentive dollars and then offshores the musical scores in foreign countries under sub-standard conditions. Their latest blockbuster, The Avengers, was filmed stateside with $30 million in tax rebates but the company fled to Europe to record the film score, escaping payments to musicians’ pension, health care and residual funds, benefits that were received by the actors, writers, directors and film crew workers up and down the production line. The Avengers, budgeted at $200 million – as is Iron Man 3 – grossed nearly $1.5 billion in worldwide box office revenue less than a month after its release. Disney’s assets stood at $74 billion in 2011 with reported net income of $4.8 billion on revenue of $40 billion.  Disney acquired Marvel in 2009 for $4.24 billion. Disney CEO Bob Iger earned $50 million in 2011. “Marvel lines its pockets with taxpayer money, taking care of everyone who works on their films, except musicians” said AFM President Ray Hair. “Marvel’s actions toward professional musicians are un-American and unfair and we want the world to know it,” he said. Disney-Marvel’s Iron Man 3 is shooting in Wilmington, North Carolina this month, with millions in tax rebate guarantees.
