AFM Endorses Richard Trumka for President of the AFL-CIO

New York, NY – The American Federation of Musicians of the United States and Canada (AFM) has endorsed Richard Trumka for President of the AFL-CIO.  At its meeting on July 23, the AFM International Executive Board also endorsed incumbent Arlene Holt Baker for Executive Vice President and Liz Shuler for Secretary-Treasurer for the AFL-CIO election this September.  The election will be held as current President John Sweeney prepares to retire at the end of this term.

“Rich Trumka has always been a friend to musicians and his creative and energetic approach on behalf of working people will help address the needs of millions of working families that are now suffering in these difficult times,” said AFM President Thomas F. Lee.  “Over the years, I have had the privilege of working with Rich, Arlene and Liz and can attest to their unwavering dedication to the labor movement.

“The AFM looks forward to working with Rich and helping him move the working families’ agenda forward so all of our citizens may live the American dream,” continued Lee.

Trumka, now in his fourth term as AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer, has been a strong and powerful voice for workers all over North America. He was first elected to the position in 1995, the youngest secretary-treasurer in AFL-CIO history, as part of an insurgent campaign to reinvigorate the American labor movement and has continued that level of energy ever since.

“This is an exciting time to be involved in the labor movement and the ticket of Trumka, Holt Baker, and Shuler brings a level of energy and quality of leadership that seeks to continue that excitement for many years to come,” concluded Lee.
