Freelance & Membership Development

Freelance & Membership Development

The AFM has existed for over a hundred years by representing and serving musicians performing all types of music in all types of venues. The vast majority of our current members do not enjoy the benefits provided by a Local or Federation negotiated Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). Typically, they provide "freelance" musical services to multiple engagers/employers annually. In fact, each performing engagement may involve a different engager/employer.

Whether it be a young rock band from Seattle playing a one-niter in Boston; or a seasoned string quartet from Toronto providing the music for a local wedding service, the AFM is their music business partner. As such, the Freelance Services and Membership Development Divisions exists to:

  • Provide day-to-day information/support to Local Officers and members on a wide variety of freelance related topics.
  • Coordinate the establishment of Local-based Freelance Committees that will participate in the ongoing development and implementation of new Federation services and benefits.
  • Assist in the coordination of increased information meetings/seminars at the Local level in support of membership retention and recruitment. Assist in the development of concepts for new Federation materials and programs in support of these efforts.
  • Assist Locals to establish and/or improve their booking referral programs.
  • Provide direct assistance to potential new members.
  • Develop and maintain the AFM's MySpace presence.
